What is a Mahadasha?

A Mahadasha ("great period") is a long stretch of time during which one of the nine planets rules your life. The Vedic system tracks nine Mahadashas that total exactly 120 years — a full human lifespan in classical thought. You are born into a specific Mahadasha determined by the Nakshatra of your Moon at birth, and you cycle through the remaining planets in a fixed order.

Venus (Shukra) — 20 years

Sun (Surya) — 6 years

Moon (Chandra) — 10 years

Mars (Mangal) — 7 years

Rahu — 18 years

Jupiter (Guru) — 16 years

Saturn (Shani) — 19 years

Mercury (Budh) — 17 years

Why Mahadashas matter more than transits

Western astrology watches current transits — where the planets are today versus where they were at your birth. That answers short-term questions: this week, this month, this year.

Vedic Mahadashas answer a different question: what is the theme of this chapter of your life? A Jupiter Mahadasha often coincides with expansion, teaching, higher learning, and spiritual work. Antardasha: the sub-periods

Within each Mahadasha, there is a nested sequence of Antardashas (sub-periods).
