The system in one paragraph

Ashtakoota Milan compares two birth charts across eight dimensions (kootas), each worth a different number of points, totalling 36. The count is based mostly on each person's Moon sign and Nakshatra — the emotional and instinctive layer of the chart — because marriage, in the Vedic view, is lived day-to-day in the emotional realm.

What the eight kootas measure

Varna (1 point) — ego balance and work compatibility. Vashya (2) — mutual influence and attraction. Tara (3) — health and fortune as a pair. Yoni (4) — physical and instinctive compatibility. Graha Maitri (5) — friendship between your Moon-sign lords, the mental wavelength. Gana (6) — temperament match (deva, manushya, rakshasa). Bhakoot (7) — emotional bond and family prosperity. What is a good score?

Traditionally: below 18 is considered inauspicious, 18–24 is acceptable, 25–32 is very good, and 33–36 is excellent (and rare). But the number is a screening tool, not a verdict. A 20 with strong Graha Maitri and clean Nadi can be a happier match than a 28 with a Nadi dosha.

Two overrides matter more than the total: Nadi dosha (0 in Nadi) and Bhakoot dosha are treated as serious flags — yet both have classical cancellation rules (dosha parihara) that many quick calculators ignore. Always check whether a flagged dosha is actually cancelled in your specific pair of charts.

What guna matching does not cover
